Many people – well, some people, at least – have a different level of glazing on different sides of their house. In the Puget Sound, we have a few challenges. The winters are long, dark and wet.


The window panes in my West Seattle home are cracked. Can I just replace the pane, and not the whole glass unit?

This is a tricky question. Most windows today – at least in homes where people live, but less so in places like warehouses – windows are more often than not double or even triple-glazed. That means there is more than one pane of glass in a single frame.

A lot depends on where exactly your house is. Are you directly on the waterfront? If so, I’ll tell you that many people avoid wood frame windows if their house is subjected to a lot of salty seawater in the winter breezes that blow off the ocean.
